Washington: If a few committed lawmakers win a legislative campaign that is nearly guaranteed to fail, visitors arriving in the US capital may soon be landing at “Trump International Airport.”
In a show of support for the former president who is seeking reelection to the presidency, Trump supporters in the House of Representatives began the process on Tuesday to rename Washington’s primary airport.
Although a tiny airport in the city is named for former president Ronald Reagan, the main airport is currently named after John Foster Dulles, the secretary of state in the 1950s.
The main deputy whip for the Republican Party in the House, Congressman Guy Reschenthaler, announced that he was proposing legislation to rename the institution since Trump was “the best president of my lifetime.” “Hearing ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ as they land on American soil is a better symbol of freedom, prosperity, and strength than the millions of domestic and international travelers who fly through the airport,” Reschenthaler stated.
Despite having at least six co-sponsors, the bill is unlikely to get into law because Democrats are in control of the Senate and the White House and there is a lack of Republican support in the House.
According to the proposed bill, all laws, rules, maps, documents, and other official records would have to have their names changed.
Opponents of the campaign joked sharply, especially because it came right after April Fools’ Day.
“No one wants to tour Dulles Airport because it’s outdated and unsightly. Therefore, in my opinion, this is a worthy homage,” Democratic congressman Brendan Boyle stated.
