MIRPURKHAS: Sources state that on Monday night, following their apprehension by the Punjab police, the three police officers designated in the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the family of blasphemy suspect Dr. Shah Nawaz Kunbhar were being escorted to Mirpurkhas.
According to them, SI Hidayatullah Narejo and constables Nadir and Qadir had fled Sindh due to controversy surrounding Dr. Kunbhar’s death during an encounter in Mirpurkhas.
The physician, who lives in the Umerkot district, was detained in Karachi and turned over to the Mirpurkhas police following a backlash to some of the posts he had made on social media. Religious organizations in Sindh organized a number of protests and demonstrations in response to the posts, which were interpreted as blasphemous.
Dr. Kunbhar was shot dead in a “encounter,” according to the Mirpurkhas police, who only claimed control of him a day earlier. The grieving family and many who supported them flocked to the streets to demand justice, fueling the instability that followed the allegation. To avoid the agitators’ fury, the police unit involved in the alleged incident withdrew underground.
It was discovered on Monday that the Punjab police had located and apprehended all three of the officers.
To arrest the policemen and return them to the Mirpurkhas, a group of Mirpurkhas police officers traveled to Punjab.
The police officers, according to a source, had turned off their cell phones in order to prevent being found, but the Punjab police were able to locate them thanks to contemporary technology.
In the meantime, a cleric named in a FIR related to the burning of Dr. Kunbhar’s body, Pir Agha Umer Jan Sarhandi, was given five days of interim bail by the Mirpurkhas Anti-Terrorism Court on Monday. He is charged with encouraging a mob to set the body on fire.
