If we take a look at the time when there was no Facebook or Twitter etc. we will come to know that how swiftly our lives have changed. Use of Social Media Leads to Isolation, Psychologists Reveal.
Social media sites have taken over our lives. Everything has its own pros and cons and so does social media sites. According to psychologists, the sites that have been designed to help people connect are veritably evoking them to feel more alone.
A study has found that the more the time spend on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Pintrest, the more likely young people are to feel disconnected from the rest of society. Those who spend over two hours daily on social media are more prone to social isolation.
Use of Social Media Leads to Isolation, Psychologists Reveal
The US research revealed that the more the users visit social media sites the more the negative effect on them.
Lead scientist Professor Brian Primack, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, said:
“This is an important issue to study. Because mental health problems and social isolation are at epidemic levels among young adults. We are inherently social creatures, but modern life tends to compartmentalize us instead of bringing us together. While it may seem that social media presents opportunities to fill that social void, I think this study suggests that it may not be the solution people were hoping for.”
The research team asked 1,787 adults (19-32) about their use of 11 popular social media platforms. Every individual was valuated for self-perceived social isolation using a standard technique called the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System. That offers scores for a vast range of measurements.
So it can be said that excess use of social media sites leads to loneliness and isolation. The more time a person spends online, the less time is left for face-to-face interactions.
Furthermore, certain aspects of social media may stimulate feelings of exclusion. Such as seeing pictures of friends enjoying an occasion to which you have not been invited.
In the end it can be said that if users can keep balance between their own life and social networking nothing can go wrong.
