The Dawn Media Group and The Express Tribune are among 63 finalists chosen out of 471 submissions for the Data Journalism Awards 2016 held annually by the Global Editors Network (GEN).
A pre-jury sifted through 471 submissions, whittling down the list to 63 finalists in 10 categories for the fifth Data Journalism Awards. Winners will be announced at a ceremony during the GEN Summit 2016 in Vienna, Austria on June 16.
The competition is supported by the Google News Lab and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and aims to highlight trends and innovative techniques in data journalism over the past year.
Dawn.com’s project, 144 Stories: Remembering lives lost in the Peshawar school attack, has been nominated as a finalist in the ‘Data Visualisation of the Year (large newsroom) category, while The Express Tribune’s Pollution continues to batter city’s lungs, ears is nominated as a finalist in the ‘Open Data’ category.
The Dawn 144 Stories project attempted to put a human face to the Dec 2014 Army Public School tragedy, taking readers beyond the death toll in the Taliban attack to remember the lives lost in the carnage. The project, a six-month-long endeavour undertaken in 2015, was the collective effort of a team of reporters who visited 144 families and collected their stories, and producers who helped build those stories into an interactive feature.

The Express Tribune story highlights the risks of air pollution for traffic police officers and vendors and touches upon factor contributing to the problem, such as urbanisation and increasing rural-urban migration.
