LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has appointed two judges as election tribunals, instead of nine as asked by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), to hear cases related to the February 8 elections.
Justice Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar along with Justice Sultan Tanvir Ahmad’s names have been submitted to the ECP for selection as election tribunal members, according to an official.
He stated that the ECP has asked the LHC to spare nine judges for election tribunals.
However, he stated that Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti voted down the proposal due to the large backlog of cases and the judges’ poor strength.
The LHC currently has 39 judges, with a sanctioned number of 60.
Following the nomination of two judges to the tribunal, the LHC will have 37 judges. There have been no selection of judges to the high court since 2021.
