COPENHAGEN: According to police on Wednesday, Danish investigators looking into an alleged bicycle theft discovered artwork that had been taken from a Copenhagen gallery in late March.
Since over 17,000 bicycles were abducted in the Danish capital last year, some concerned riders have started installing GPS trackers on their bikes to aid in their recovery. A police search of a southern Copenhagen location was prompted by one of these trackers.
Police released a statement saying, “We found much more than a stolen bike at the address in question.”
Eleven electric bikes and scooters that were thought to be stolen were found. In the meantime, some artworks that had been taken on the evening of March 31 from a gallery in Copenhagen have been found.
Kristian von Hornsleth, an artist, had between twenty and thirty pieces of art stolen from his gallery. The thieves broke in by using a car as a battering ram. Von Hornsleth’s team reported that fourteen were found during the police search.
At the scene, two men, ages 32 and 40, were taken into custody on charges of aggravated theft. The way the artwork got into their hands is being investigated by the police.
Bicycle theft is the crime that worries Copenhagen residents the most, according to a study conducted by the mayor’s office.
