According to state-run Radio Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will go to Baku, Azerbaijan, on Tuesday to attend the two-day World Leaders Climate Action Summit, which is a component of the 29th UN Climate Change Conference, or COP29.
The World Leaders Climate Action Summit, which is being hosted by the Azerbaijani Presidency, will bring together world leaders to make national announcements about their progress toward the Paris Climate Agreement. The US and China will co-host a greenhouse gas (GHG) meeting with the Presidency on methane and non-carbon dioxide (non-CO2).
The prime minister will make a strong case for climate justice and solidarity based on accepted equity principles.
The former president of the Maldives, Muhammad Nasheed, visited Pakistan’s pavilion at COP29 in Baku, where he met with the secretary of the climate change ministry and PM’s coordinator on climate change, Romina Khurshid Alam, on X.
It stated in another post: “Pakistan’s delegation will highlight increased pledges to climate finance and adaptation at #COP29. Given the unprecedented effects on the environment, now is the time for decisive action.
With more frequent and severe weather events like record-breaking floods, heavy monsoon rains, devastating heat waves, rapid glacial melting, and glacial lake outburst floods, Pakistan is one of the top 10 most climate-vulnerable nations.
Record-breaking temperatures brought on by a heat wave in June 2024 had a negative effect on agriculture and public health.
Due to climate change, the nation saw the worst floods in its history in 2022, which caused enormous destruction. This resulted in the loss of 1,700 lives, the affliction of 33 million people, the erosion of vast tracts of agricultural land, and, according to government estimates, damages of $30 billion.
