PESHAWAR: The timetable for the upcoming Senate elections in the province was made public by a notification published by the provincial election commissioner on Thursday.
The KP Assembly will host polling on April 2 in order to fill the Senate seats that are vacant from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The returning officer for these elections is PEC Shamshad Ahmad.
The PEC asked the KP Assembly’s members to choose representatives for the seven general seats as well as the two seats each set out for women and technocrats, including KP province’s ulema.
The public notice states that on March 15 and 16, nomination papers must be submitted to the returning officer. On March 17, the names of the nominated candidates will be released.
March 19 is the deadline for reviewing the nomination papers, and March 21 is the deadline for filing an appeal against the acceptance or rejection of the documents.
The appeals deadline is March 25. Following this date, the updated candidate lists will be released on March 26.
A candidate has until March 27 to withdraw their nomination papers.
After the former incumbents’ terms ended on March 11, 2024, these seats became vacant.
Bahramand Khan Tanghi (PPPP), Faisal Javed Khan (PTI), Fida Mohammad (PTI), Pir Syed Mohammad Sabir Shah (PML-N), Mohammad Talha Mahmood (JUI-F), and Mushtaq Ahmad (Jamaat-i-Islami) are among those who served out their terms on general seats.
Two female senators, Dr. Mehr Taj Roghani (PTI) and Rubina Khalid (PPPP), have served out their tenure. In a similar vein, independent Dilawar Khan and PTI’s Azam Khan Swati served out their terms in opposition to technocrat-reserved seats.
