BANGKOK: Thaksin Shinawatra, the jailed previous Thai prime leader, is set to be released, potentially within as soon as the weekend, only six months shortly after returning from fifteen years of imposed exile.
The notorious millionaire, who was twice elected prime minister before being deposed in a 2006 armed coup, was sentenced to eight years in prison in August on graft and misuse of power charges, but King Maha Vajiralongkorn commuted his sentence to one year within days.
Tawee Sodsong Justice Minister announced Tuesday that the prior Manchester City owner, 74, was going to be among 930 convicts released early.
“He belongs to the category of people who are either in serious condition or over the age of 70. “He will be released automatically after six months,” Tawee Sodsong told journalists.
Thaksin was imprisoned on August 22nd of the previous year, and Thai press indicated that he could be released any day beginning Saturday.
The specifics of his freedom are unknown, however he may be tied to surveillance (perhaps with an ankle tag) and prohibitions on his ability to travel.
