Jalpaiguri: A suspected ISI agent, who was arrested on May 18 from Garidhura in Kurseong, was mistakenly released from Darjeeling jail on Thursday evening. The suspected agent MaganBahadur Singh (54), however, Thankfully for the police, the man, MaganBahadurSingh (54),surrendered in Siliguri on Friday afternoon.
Singh was arrested last month on charges of having connections with the
Pakistani intelligence department. He was first taken to police custody for a few days and then sent to judicial custody. From then he was in the Darjeeling correctional home.On Thursday, Singh was brought to Kurseong court for a hearing in connection to a separate case. He was also accused in a murder case and was out on bail from 2008. After the hearing at the Kurseong court when he was taken back to Darjeeling jail, the jail officials released him saying that they got his release orders.
A resident of Chhota Adampur village under Garidhura police outpost in Kurseong, Singh consulted with his lawyer after returning home. On Friday, he held a press conference at Siliguri and then surrendered before the police.
Talking to the media in Siliguri, Singh claimed that he had no connection with the ISI and said that police have framed a false case against him. “I don’t know what made them realize that I am an ISI agent,” he said.
Singh’s surrender came as a big relief for the police department. Darjeeling SPKunalAgarwal said a magisterial inquiry has been started against the jail officials.
