MADRID: On Thursday, Spain said that it would support South Africa’s appeal before the UN’s highest court, in which Pretoria has charged Israel with committing “genocide” in the Gaza Strip.
His remarks were made one week after Israel became enraged when Spain, Ireland, and Norway recognized the state of Palestine.
“Our only objective is to terminate the conflict and progress towards implementing the two-state solution,” Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares stated to reporters.
When asked if he thought Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, Albares replied that the court should make that determination. “We are currently witnessing a massive conflict in Gaza that lacks distinction between military and civilian objectives, along with a significant risk of regional ramifications,” he continued.
A number of Latin American countries, such as Mexico and Colombia, have already joined South Africa’s court case.
However, no European nation has done so up until now. Ireland has stated that it intends to intervene in the lawsuit.
