At least three Rangers personnel were killed when gunmen riding motorcycles opened fire on their vehicle in Karachi’s Baldia Town area on Friday.
Another Rangers’ soldier was injured in the attack, which took place in Baldia’s Ittehad Town neighbourhood where the security personnel were posted for security duty during Friday prayers outside Madina Masjid.
The injured soldier was shifted to a hospital for emergency treatment, but was later pronounced dead.
DG Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, Maj-Gen Bilal Akbar, who visited the location of the attack immediately after the incident, confirmed the deaths of three Rangers personnel.
“The gunmen may have come to attack the mosque. Our jawans (soldiers) who were posted for security duty stopped the terrorists. Three personnel have been martyred,” he said while speaking to the media.
He said that the attackers were riding between two and three motorcycles.
“We are carrying out investigation of the incident,” he said, vowing that the attackers and the planners will be brought to justice.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has condemned the attack on the Rangers personnel in Karachi.
