LAHORE: In the case of a lady harassed in Ichhra Bazaar for wearing a clothing with Arabic letters written on it, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Tuesday granted pre-arrest release to a cleric, Maulana Aleemuddin Shakir.
The cleric and his attorney appeared in court, with the attorney arguing that the petitioner want to become involved in the police investigation in order to establish his innocence. He did, however, express concern about the petitioner’s possible police detention.
According to him, the petitioner was one among those who shielded the woman from an angry mob. He claimed that the petitioner’s involvement in the incident had also been praised by the police.
He requested that the petitioner be granted pre-arrest release since he was prepared to provide surety bonds.
The petitioner was granted bail by Judge Arshad Javed, which prevented the police from arresting him until March 25.
Three suspects in the same case who were being held by the police were remanded by the court just now.
Suspects Muhammad Nadeem, Adil Sarwar, and Altimash Saglain allegedly harassed the woman and encouraged others to kill her, according to the police.
A week after the incident in Ichhra Bazaar, where dozens of angry individuals denounced a woman of “blasphemy” because she was wearing a shirt with an Arabic calligraphy print, Ichhra police had filed a FIR. The woman was threatened to death by the mob. But the woman had been saved by a police team under the command of ASP Sheharbano Naqvi, and she had been taken to a police station.
BAIL: In the Jinnah House attack case, an ATC on Tuesday extended the pre-arrest bail of former federal minister Asad Umar and PTI-Sunni Ittehad Council MNA Zain Qureshi.
As his bond period was about to expire, Mr. Qureshi showed up in court.
As duty judge, Judge Arshad Javed considered the applications and increased the petitioners’ bail until April 20.
Additionally, the judge granted Mr. Umar’s request for a one-time exemption from making a personal appearance.
In a different case, the judge placed SIC MPA Hafiz Farhat Abbas in jail on judicial remand after refusing to grant him physical remands to the Racecourse police.
Abbas was brought before the court by the police for his initial remand in connection with an incident in which he attacked police cars and squads outside PTI founder Imran Khan’s Zaman Park home.
The judge, however, denied the police motion and placed the MPA under judicial remand.
The MPA had already been placed on judicial remand in relation to organizing a protest against the purported manipulation of the most recent general elections.
