KARACHI: The Karachi business community has called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to keep his word and provide an environment that is conducive to business, as he promised to do in the final days of his previous administration.
In a letter to the prime minister, Chairman of the Businessmen Group (BMG) Zubair Motiwala and President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh, recalled that most of the issues remain unresolved to date, despite assurances made by federal secretaries during a meeting held at PNS Dockyard in the presence of the prime minister during his previous tenure.
According to them, a number of other problems have also surfaced over time, most notably the impact that rising energy prices are having on SMEs and industries, which calls for government assistance.
Additionally, they asked the premier to visit the KCCI as soon as he makes his first trip to Karachi as prime minister. This would give the business community the ideal chance to address any outstanding issues in the public eye, even in light of obligations.
They were hoping that the prime minister would act decisively to stabilize both the economy, which was going through a very difficult moment, and democracy.
Following his election as Sindh’s chief minister, they had high hopes that Mr. Shah would maintain his strong voice and persuade the federal government to enact Article 158 of the Constitution in its entirety, as its current implementation appears to be in jeopardy. Meanwhile, industries were suffering from a severe gas shortage and were being forced to pay increased prices for RLNG, necessitating the intervention of the chief minister.
