Sumair Ahmad Syed, the PCB’s chief operating officer, was named the tournament director for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan, the PCB announced Thursday.
The Champions Trophy, which was last held in England in 2017, was won by Pakistan. Three cities will host the competition from February 19 to March 9.
Chairperson Mohsin Naqvi stated in a PCB press release that Sumair is a highly organized professional with a plethora of administrative experience.
“With his unwavering love for cricket, I am sure he will give players, officials, and fans alike an ICC Champions Trophy 2025 they won’t soon forget.”
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Naqvi continued, was expected to demonstrate Pakistan’s capacity to host top-tier cricket competitions. He invited athletes and supporters from all over the world to enjoy the nation’s renowned hospitality and love for the game.
“As the largest athletic event in Pakistan’s recent history, this competition represents a historic milestone. The international cricket community can be sure that the event will live up to the highest standards of excellence that are associated with Pakistan since Sumair is leading the way.
The tournament director, meantime, expressed his excitement and deep honor at taking on this important role for a tournament that is extremely important to the PCB, our supporters, and our fans.
“With stadium improvements almost finished and important talks with the ICC still going on, preparations are already well under way.”
Additionally, he stated that the success of the tournament would be greatly dependent on the PCB’s skilled events staff.
Despite India’s decision not to send a team to the competition, Naqvi reaffirmed on Monday that the Champions Trophy would still take place in the nation.
The Indian Board of Control for Cricket notified the world governing body last week that its national squad will not be traveling to Pakistan for the eight-nation tournament, the ICC informed the PCB. Since then, the PCB has replied to the ICC and has not heard back.
The Champions Trophy trip began with a stately ceremony in Islamabad on Saturday. The glistening trophy was on display at several important sites in the federal capital, such as the Pakistan Monument, the Faisal Mosque, and Daman-e-Koh.
