UNITED NATIONS: As the UN Disarmament Commission convened for its 2024 session on Monday, Pakistan was unanimously chosen to serve as chair.
The meeting comes amid rising geopolitical tensions and concerns about the growing animosity between some of the world’s most powerful militaries.
Pakistan notified the committee following its election that it saw India’s massive arms purchases and assertive military tactics as a danger to South Asia’s peace and security.
As the commission got underway for its three-week session, Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram stated, “Needless to say, these developments affect Pakistan’s security.”
The panel, which is tasked with producing recommendations on both conventional and nuclear disarmament, is an essential part of the UN General Assembly. The United Nations High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu, issued a dire warning at the start of its 2024 annual session, stating that “the risk of a nuclear weapon being used is higher now than at any time since the height of the cold war.”
