ISLAMABAD: A three-member Pakistan squash squad will proceed to Australia on July 22 to feature in Victorian Open and Australian Open PSA International event, Secretary Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) Group Captain Aamir Nawaz said on Tuesday.
“We will send our three players – Nasir Iqbal, Farhan Zaman and Tayyab Aslam to represent the country in these events,” he told APP.
The 2015 Vic Open will be held from July 27 to August 2 and will feature graded events on August 1 and 2 for players of all abilities to compete alongside the professionals. While the Australian Open, PSA International 25 event will make its first appearance on the PSA World Tour since 2012 when it gets underway on August 05 with some high-profile names ready to do battle for the title.
Nawaz said that both senior and junior players had undergone vigorous training in the month-long training camp at the Mushaf Squash Complex, Islamabad in the holy month of Ramazan.
“Players have been getting training daily in the camp after ‘Taraweeh’ prayers till ‘Sehri. They are in good shape and we are hopeful they will earn a prominent place in the events,” he added.
Meanwhile, Squash and Racquetball Victoria executive director Fiona Young said the quality of entries for this year’s Australian Open was outstanding.
“To have 18 players ranked in the world top 50 is fantastic and we are keen to show the sporting public how good squash can be live,” Young was quoted as saying by Australian daily Herald Sun.
“The all-glass court is a great showcase for the sport and we are hoping for sellout crowds for the finals,” Young added.
