Pakistani Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua met Myanmar Ambassador U Win Myint on Saturday to convey the country’s vehement protest against the persecution of the Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State in Myanmar.
The foreign office had summoned Myint to register its protest.
Janjua implored the dignitary to employ effective measures to prevent a recurrence of such violence as well as ensuring the security of the community.
Moreover, she appealed for the upholding of the Rohingyas’ rights to live without fear of discrimination.
The foreign secretary demanded an investigation into the recent violence in this regard. She also demanded that those responsible for the atrocities be brought to justice immediately.
Janjua called for a swift settlement to the problem and to implement recommendations of the Kofi Annan Commission was also emphasised.
The Myanmar ambassador assured his Pakistani counterpart that he would convey her concerns to his government.
Thousands of Rohingya Muslims have poured into Bangladesh in the past few days as local militants and security forces have burned down their villages in clashes.
