NEW DELHI: According to The Wire on Sunday, a mob that did not want the students to perform namaz in the dormitory allegedly attacked international students on the Gujarat University campus on Saturday night.
It stated that a few hurt pupils had been admitted to Ahmedabad’s SVP Hospital.
Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik told The Hindu that “about 300 foreign students from Africa, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and other countries study here at the Gujarat University.”
Around 10:30 p.m. yesterday, about 75 international students who reside in Block A offered prayers at their dorm.
A group of twenty to twenty-five persons visited the hostel grounds and asked the foreign students to perform namaz in a mosque instead of there. They fought, attacked, and threw stones at them over the disagreement.
Still, the commissioner of police asserted that everything was under control. The officer stated that 20–25 individuals had a FIR filed against them and will shortly be placed under arrest.
Vibes of India claims that the mob’s screaming of “Jai Shri Ram” slogans was what started the violence.
On social media, videos of stone-throwing and destruction have gone viral. The videos also featured destroyed rooms, smashed laptops, and wrecked bikes. Some of the images show people tossing insults and stones at the international students living in the dormitory. The portal stated that the foreign students could be heard expressing that they are “scared” and that “this is unacceptable” in the images.
The students apparently convened in a hostel designated for international students to perform namaz at night during Ramadan, as there isn’t a mosque on campus. After that, the throng smashed into their rooms and stole their possessions.
Neerja Arun Gupta, vice chancellor of Gujarat University, asserted that a “clash” between two factions was the reason for the outbreak of violence. She said the administration and police were treating the situation extremely seriously.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, it has acknowledged the issue and is in communication with the state government.
