An official of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) was detained by the Shangla Police on Tuesday for allegedly attempting to sexually attack a female applicant for a computerized national identity card (CNIC).
The woman filed a complaint at the Olandar police station a day ago under Pakistan Penal Code Section 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), claiming that a Nadra official had allegedly attempted to physically assault her, according to House Officer (SHO) Bakht Zeb Khan, who spoke with Dawn.com.
The victim went to a Nadra office on Monday morning to apply for an identity card when a man requested her to go into a room for her biometric verification, according to the FIR, a copy of which can be found on Dawn.com.
She said, according to the FIR, that the man followed her into the room and harassed her, but she was able to get out. She eventually told her father-in-law and brother about the event.
The SHO claimed that after the incident, a mob had assembled, but he was able to disperse it by offering guarantees.
The complainant’s statement was then recorded, and a FIR was subsequently filed.
After the case was registered, the suspect was taken into custody by the police, who then brought him before the court to start a new investigation.
According to him, Nadra authorities also paid the center a visit and informed the infuriated crowd that the suspect had been suspended and that an investigative committee had been established to look into the matter.
