ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi have chosen not to receive their monthly salary due to the precarious state of the nation’s economy.
The President’s Office claims that Mr. Zardari will not be receiving his presidential pay. “He made this decision to promote responsible financial management throughout the nation,” the Presidency said in a formal press statement on Tuesday.
The president favored not to receive his salary because he believed it was imperative to avoid burdening the public coffers.
Subsequently, President Zardari took off for Karachi, his first trip to any area of the nation since taking office on Sunday.
He went to Mazar-i-Quaid in Karachi and placed a flower wreath there as a sign of respect for Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the country’s founder.
He will also pay a visit to the mausoleum of PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and his wife, former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, in Gari Khuda Bakhsh.
Mohsin Naqvi, the interior minister, has also said that he will not be receiving his salary.
The interior ministry claims that Mr. Naqvi will not get his monthly salary while serving as a minister.
The interior minister declared on X, the former Twitter, that “he is committed to support and serving the nation in every possible way during this challenging time.”
Earlier, during a small event held at a nearby hotel in his honor, he met with the Lahore legal community.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Punjab and Pakistan Bar Councils, federal Minister of Law Senator Azam Nazir Tarar, and former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association Ahsan Bhawan.
Officials from other bar associations as well as Advocate General Punjab took part in the event.
Members of the legal community praised Mr. Naqvi’s work as Punjab’s chief minister. They noted that he finished public projects quickly and that his work ethic was exceptional on all fronts.
They offered their best wishes and congratulated Mr. Naqvi on his appointment as a federal minister.
The minister promised to try his hardest to carry out the task that had been given to him.
