More than a week after going missing, a member of the ruling party of Bangladesh was discovered dead in the Indian city of Kolkata on Wednesday morning, according to Bangladesh’s Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan.
Anwarul Azim Anar, 56, an Awami League member who won his third term in a row in a constituency in the Jhenaidah border district, vanished on May 13, the day after departing for medical care in India, according to his family.
The lawmaker’s death led to the arrest of three Bangladeshis, Khan informed reporters.
He stated that while Bangladeshi and Kolkatan police were working together on the investigation, they were unable to “disclose all information at the moment for the sake of the investigation.”
On Wednesday, Indian police informed Reuters that the lawmaker’s body had not yet been found and that a murder investigation had been filed in the case.
“We have obtained video recordings from the apartment building where he resided throughout his visit. In the course of the investigation, some blood traces were also discovered, according to senior police official Akhilesh Chaturvedi of Kolkata’s home state of West Bengal.
The attackers “may be” connected to terrorist organizations, according to a second senior police source who asked to remain anonymous.
Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister, sent her condolences and profound sadness over the legislator’s passing.
