The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has formally allowed Samsung, a South Korean electronics giant, to start out production of its mobile devices within the country through its local partner Lucky Motor Corporation Ltd.
The PTA on Tuesday issued a Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) authorization to Lucky Motor to line up a factory in Karachi for producing Korean mobile devices.
The PTA has thus far issued around 25 MDM authorizations to foreign and native companies for the assembly of mobile devices (2G/3G/4G).
The locally manufactured mobile devices also will be exported and can have a big impact on reducing the imports of mobile devices and their accessories.
“The authorization to manufacture Samsung mobile devices in Pakistan was a landmark achievement and can help further revolutionize the colourful mobile manufacturing ecosystem within the country,” the PTA said during a statement.
The addition of Samsung to the list of companies that have established their production line within the country has been welcomed by existing players including Airlink, which is manufacturing major Chinese mobile brands including Huawei.
“Currently most the assembly line has been found out by the Chinese companies and therefore the arrival of the Korean giant will significantly provide a boost to the mobile sets manufacturing sector,” said Airlink chief military officer Muzzaffar Hayat Piracha.
He added that the main target of most of the manufacturers was currently over the production line, but at an equivalent time, there was an enormous potential and investment coming within the sales and marketing side too.
As the competition within the IT and telecom sector continues to grow, one among the mobile device manufacturing units is about to boost finances through the stock exchange.
Airlink is ready to launch what’s said to be the most important initial public offering (IPO) of the IT and Telecom sector and its book building process is going to be persisted Aug 30 and 31.
“We shall generate between Rs5.85 billion and Rs8bn through the floating of the company’s shares at the stock exchange,” Mr Hayat said.
