KURRAM: With the opening of educational institutions on Monday, some semblance of normalcy returned to the restive area following days of deadly fighting that claimed the lives of about 100 people.
After a ceasefire mediated by a jirga, all of the district’s schools and institutions reopened, according to Kurram Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mahsud.
Additionally, cellular communications that were halted following conflicts last month have been restored.
A resident informed Dawn that the main route connecting the province capital Peshawar and Parachinar in upper Kurram remained closed to traffic despite the ceasefire.
On November 21, a convoy of cars was ambushed on the highway, resulting in the deaths of about 40 persons. Since then, traffic has been prohibited on the road.
Only ten of the previous fifty days had vehicle convoys using the main road, the local informed Dawn.
There was a severe shortage of food and other everyday necessities in the district as a result of the road closures.
Kurram DC According to Mahsud, the police and security forces have taken over the trenches that the fighting parties used to assault one another.
CM meets with Jirga
Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur met Monday with a great jirga that the provincial government had established to settle the disputes.
In order to resolve the conflict and bring about enduring peace in the district, the meeting decided to start formal negotiations.
The members of the jirga expressed their commitment to finding a peaceful solution to the problem and pledged their complete cooperation with the province government during the meeting.
In order to start the conversation, the jirga is anticipated to go to Kurram in the next several days.
Former federal minister Pir Noorul Haq Qadri, former senators Saleh Shah and Sajad Khan, former federal minister Ghazi Gulab Jamal, former KP governor Engineer Shaukatullah, Senator Abdul Raziq, and others were among the notable members of the jirga.
Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, KP CM’s advisor, attended the meeting as well.
CM Gandapur expressed gratitude to the jirga members for their support and gave them the assurance that the provincial administration will offer all the resources and help required to make the negotiation process easier. He expressed the hope that the Kurram dispute will be resolved peacefully and permanently as a result of the jirga’s efforts.
The KP chief minister directed security forces to take indiscriminate action against “militants” in Kurram last week.
In order to keep the calm, he had asked the federal government to send more paramilitary Frontier Constabulary platoons and instructed security troops to demolish the bunkers.
