KARACHI: Teachers at the University of Karachi (KU) suspended all the academic activities on Tuesday after the Karachi University Teachers Society (Kuts) general body meeting and a protest demo held by the Employees Welfare Association in front of the administration block.
An emergency general body meeting was called by the Kuts executive council, where they had protested and discussed the issues of nonpayment of salaries, leave encashment, research grants and all other financial dues.
Kuts secretary Moiz Khan said that the university should have financial support, so that it can help their employees and students. “There is no human resource development in the varsity.”
The federal and provincial governments should take strong steps to resolve these salary issues. he added. “We do not get salaries on time and have not received leave encashment since last year.”
Khan also said that the finance director announced on Monday that it would take another 15 days to release the salaries for the month of July.
Khan said that the teachers would boycott the classes until their issues are resolved. Another protesting teacher said that the classes in the varsity were called off on Monday too.
Addressing the teaching and non-teaching staff, Kuts president Dr Shakeel Farooqi said that the government should increase the university’s grant by 100 per cent because Rs1 billion are not enough to manage a university as big as KU.
“The increased grant will help for betterment in classes, laboratories, salaries and other facilities,” he said.
Farooqi also asked the federal and provincial governments to find a permanent solution to these issues and for timely issuance of salaries.
