LAHORE: After 15 years of service with the national women’s squad, veteran Pakistani batter Javeria Khan revealed on Thursday that she was retiring from international cricket.
After making her debut for Pakistan against Sri Lanka in 2008, Javeria played in 228 matches for the team, scoring 4,903 runs with two centuries and 25 half-centuries. Additionally, she amassed 28 international wickets.
Aside from former captain Bismah Maroof, she is the only Pakistani women’s cricket player to have amassed more than 2000 runs in international competition.
Javeria has competed for the national team in all eight T20 World Cups since the competition’s founding as well as four 50-over World Cups (2009, 2013, 2017, and 2022). She also competed for Pakistan in the Asian Games, which were held in China in 2010 and South Korea in 2014, where the team won gold medals.
In 17 ODIs and 16 T20Is, Javeria led the Pakistani women’s squad as captain. She led the team in both the 2018 and 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cups out of the 16 T20Is.
“I want to announce my retirement and call it a day, but I’ll still be available for league cricket.” She was cited as stating, “I am grateful to the unwavering support I received throughout my career,” in a Pakistan Cricket Board press release.
“I would like to express my gratitude to my supporters who helped me reach my full potential and to my family, team members, the Pakistan Cricket Board, and my department ZTBL for their unwavering support and guidance at every turn.”
