ADDIS ABABA: Comparing Israel’s conduct to Adolf Hitler’s goal of eradicating the Jewish people, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has charged Israel with committing “genocide” against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.
While in Addis Ababa for an African Union conference on Sunday, Lula told reporters that what was occurring in the Gaza Strip was a genocide rather than a battle.
“This is not a conflict between military personnel.” He continued, “It’s a conflict between mothers and children and a professionally prepared army.
There has never been anything like what is occurring to the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. In actuality, Hitler’s decision to exterminate the Jewish population did occur.
These were perhaps of Lula’s most forceful remarks on the war to date. Lula is a well-known representative of the global south, and his nation now holds the G20 rotating chair.
President Lula criticized Western nations for their recent decisions to stop funding UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, and vowed that Brazil would increase its own contribution to the organization. He also urged other nations to follow suit. President Lula emphasized his call for a two-state settlement to the dispute with Palestine “definitively acknowledged as a full and sovereign state.”
