JERUSALEM: Following months of cross-border gunfire, the Israeli military announced on Wednesday that its fighter jets had “begun a series of strikes in Lebanon,” sparking concerns of a conflict between the two nations.
While Lebanese press reported the attacks on southern villages notably Adchit, Sawwaneh, and Shihabiyeh, the military provided no additional details about the air strikes.
The strikes occurred hours after medics reported many injuries in northern Israel due to shelling from Lebanon.
Five of the seven injured individuals were in the town of Safed, according to the Magen David Adom rescue agency.
A wounded individual was being evacuated from Safed’s Ziv hospital by military helicopter, as witnessed by an AFP photographer.
Hezbollah, a terrorist organization from Lebanon that has engaged in almost daily firefights with Israeli forces since the start of the Gaza War more than four months ago, did not immediately claim responsibility for the missile launches.
Seyed Hassan Nasrallah, the head of Hezbollah, declared on Tuesday that the group’s shelling from southern Lebanon will stop “when the attack on Gaza stops and there is a ceasefire” between Israel, its fierce enemy, and Hamas, its Palestinian allies.
In a broadcast speech, Nasrallah threatened, “We will do the same if they (Israel) broaden the confrontation.”
With tens of thousands of people evacuated on both sides of the border and rising regional tensions, fears have been mounting that Israel and Hezbollah will engage in another full-fledged confrontation.
