AMMAN: According to official election results revealed on Wednesday, Jordan’s main Islamist opposition party has tripled its representation in the house by winning 31 out of 138 seats in the kingdom’s parliament.
After Tuesday’s vote, the Islamic Action Front, a political branch of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan, emerged victorious over other parties and factions in the legislature but was unable to secure a majority.
The outcome represents the Islamists’ most representation since they took 22 of the 80 seats in the previous parliament in 1989, marking a historic victory for them. The IAF was elected to 16 seats in the 2016 legislature and 10 members in the preceding parliament, which was formed in 2020.
The Islamists had attempted to take advantage of Jordanians, who make about half of the population, as they became more and more enraged at the continuing violence in Gaza. IAF Secretary General Wael al Saqqa stated, “We are happy with these results and with the confidence placed in us by the Jordanian people.”
