GILGIT: As severe rain and snowfall continue to affect life in the area, as well as in areas of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, one person was killed after being struck by falling debris during a landslide in Astore Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, on Monday.
On Monday, major thoroughfares linking Great Britain with other regions of the nation as well as a number of inter-district roads were closed for the fourth day in a row.
In the Astore district’s Harcho neighborhood, two men riding a motorcycle were struck by falling debris during a landslide. While the second was declared missing, the first passed away instantly. Officials from Rescue 1122 suspect that he fell into a river on the other side of the road.
Shahzad has been recognized as the dead. Dashkin Valley in Astore was home to both of them. The missing person is still being sought after by rescue operations.
Near Astore, motorcycle riders are struck by falling pebbles; main routes are closed for a fourth day.
The Karakoram Highway (KKH), Baltistan Road, Astore Road, and other routes that were closed for traffic at several points because of heavy snowfall and landslides caused by rain have shut off access to the area.
A number of cars and trucks carrying cargo, as well as thousands of passengers, are stuck on both sides of the road waiting for KKH to reopen.
The GB Disaster Management Authority reports that large equipment has been sent out to remove the area of debris and start traffic again.
Following Monday’s road clearance, traffic on the Diamer-Gilgit portion of KKH has resumed, according to GB government spokesman Faizullah Faraq, who talked with Dawn.
He claimed that there are still several blocked spots on the route in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kohistan region.
“Disaster management and administration officials are overseeing the restoration work on the Baltistan and other roads with heavy machinery,” Mr. Faraq continued.
He said that the citizens of GB who were stuck in Kohistan have been moved to safer areas.
A new round of snowfall severed land access to upper regions of Astore, Skardu, Shigar, Kharmang, Ghanche, Ghizer, Hunza, and Nagar, with up to six inches of snowfall.
The people were forced to stay inside their homes when the temperature fell below zero. There have also been disruptions to mobile communications and electricity.
