The only other bowler to ever capture a hat-trick in back-to-back international matches was Pakistan’s Wasim Akram, who was surpassed by Australian pacer Pat Cummins on Sunday.
The speedster scored another three-on-three in today’s unexpected loss to Afghanistan after securing his first hat-trick earlier this week in the victory over Bangladesh.
To complete the hat-trick today, he dismissed Gulbadin Naib, Karim Janat, and Rashid Khan.
ESPNCricinfo reports that Cummins followed Akram, who accomplished the feat in back-to-back Tests against Sri Lanka in March 1999, as the only player to score a hat-trick in straight international matches.
Cummins joined Lasith Malinga, Tim Southee, Mark Pavlovic of Serbia, Waseem Abbas of Malta, and Lasith Malinga as the fifth bowler in men’s T20I history to record two hat-tricks.
According to the statement, the Australian became the first player to record a hat-trick in back-to-back ICC Men’s T20 World Cup games.
It stated, “It was the first time a player has accomplished the feat on multiple occasions and just the eighth time a bowler has completed a hat-trick at a Men’s T20 World Cup.”
Speaking during the innings break, Cummins acknowledged that he had not claimed the hat-trick in the Bangladesh game, but he did acknowledge that he knew what had happened this time.
Cummins remarked, “That one, I remembered.”
“It is incredible that after playing for Australia for almost a hundred games, I have now scored two hat-tricks in a row,” he continued.
