As one of his first acts if reelected, Donald Trump has promised to release those imprisoned for their involvement in the 2021 attack on the US Capitol, referring to them as “hostages.”
In an attempt to block Joe Biden’s assumption of office, the rioters attacked the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021, encouraged by the outgoing president and fed by his fabrications about voter fraud.
Based on the most recent data given last week by the Justice Department, in the 38 months that have passed since then, about 1,358 people have been charged. Approximately 500 people have received prison sentences.
In addition, Trump pledged, without giving any specifics, to close the border with Mexico as one of his first actions if reelected in remarks published on his Truth Social website on Monday.
He posted something late on Monday saying, “My first acts as your next President will be to Close the Border, Drill, Baby, Drill, and Free the January 6 Hostages being wrongfully imprisoned!”
Trump promised not to operate as a dictator “other than day one” at a televised town hall in December, referring to his fictitious first day in office. It’s also not the first time Trump has suggested that his followers who are in jail should be released or referred to them as “hostages.”
At an Iowa campaign rally in January, he begged President Biden to “free the J6 hostages, Joe.”
Two of the four criminal accusations against Trump are related to his attempts to rig the election results after losing to Biden. The other one is from Georgia.
With Nikki Haley withdrawing from the campaign after Trump’s resounding victories in the primaries, the Republican nominee for president is all but guaranteed.
Trump maintains that his numerous legal troubles have strengthened rather than weakened the support he receives from the Republican base.
