ISLAMABAD: Romina Khurshid Alam, the Prime Minister’s Climate Change Coordinator, asked the governments of Sindh and Balochistan to step up their efforts to protect marine ecosystems on Sunday.
The Balochistan government’s decision to designate Churna Island as a marine protected area was welcomed by the PM coordinator.
In order to meet the worldwide goal of preserving 30% of the ocean by 2030, she advocated for the creation of more marine protected areas.
“It’s a good step toward promoting environmentally sustainable development and safeguarding marine resources,” she remarked.
Churna Island, the nation’s second marine protected area, is renowned for its vast coral habitats and biodiversity.
More than 250 different types of fish, as well as a large number of invertebrates and vertebrates, can be found on the island.
She pledged her whole support to the government of Balochistan in its efforts to preserve maritime biodiversity, the island’s delicate ecosystem, and its wide variety of species.
As more than 8,000 marine protected areas include over 8% of the world’s ocean, Ms. Alam emphasized the significance of using ecosystem-based management strategies to minimize human impacts and guarantee the sustainable utilization of marine resources.
In order to solve these environmental concerns, she emphasized the need of safeguarding marine habitats and species from climate change and human activity. She also emphasized the need for shared responsibility and collective action.
Ms. Alam stated that the project will assist in controlling human activities that damage the nation’s marine ecosystems and safeguard the islands against dangers such as pollution, overfishing, and the effects of climate change.
