KARACHI: The Sindh government said on Monday that female passengers would be able to use the Pink Bus Service, which is exclusively for women, for free for a two-month period. The opening of two additional routes was also announced.
One of the two new lines will take people from Gulshan-e-Hadeed to Tower, while the other would connect Nasir Jump in Korangi with Powerhouse Chowrangi in North Karachi.
Three routes are now offering women-only service; the program, which was introduced under the Peoples Bus Service, will increase the number of routes to five. The Pink Bus Service is anticipated to provide service to thousands of women on the two main routes with a fleet of ten new buses.
Faryal Talpur, the head of the Pakistan Peoples Party women’s section, described the service as a “gift from the Sindh government to women” during the inaugural ceremony held at Frere Hall Karachi by the Sindh transport department.
“The Sindh government’s provision of secure and pleasant transportation is a priceless gift to women. In her speech, she stated, “We can promote development and prosperity in our community by providing such facilities and empowering women.
If the bus operator was unable to provide free rides for the female customers, Ms. Talpur encouraged the minister of transportation to implement “at least” more affordable and less expensive prices for them.
Following her petition, Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that all female passengers on the Pink Bus Service’s new routes would be able to travel for free for two months. Along with Sindh Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, his deputy Salman Abdullah Murad also attended the event.
The transport minister added during his speech that the new project was a manifestation of the PPP’s program, which called for the empowerment of women.
He declared, “These new initiatives are actually the results of guidance from the PPP leadership, especially, Ms. Talpur.” “International media has praised the Sindh government’s effort, which has received significant appreciation worldwide. He said, “The pink bus service’s excellent standards, reasonable prices, and dedication to safety have received recognition all around the world.
He declared that the Sindh government was unwavering in its commitment to empowering women and that efforts were in progress to train female conductors, drivers, and workers to ensure effective and efficient service delivery.
Four of the Pink Bus Service’s female drivers received licenses from Ms. Talpur at the occasion.
The Pink Bus Service was established in February 2023 and currently operates five routes. One route goes through Star Gate, Nata Khan Bridge, Drigh Road Station, PAF Base Faisal, Laal Kothi, Karsaz, Nursery, FTC, Regent Plaza, JPMC, Cant Station, Metropole, Regal Chowk, and Aram Bagh and is located between Model Colony and II Chundrigar Road.
