KARACHI: On Sunday night, an old, decaying building near Ranchore Line fell, injuring four men and one woman.
Hassaan Khan, a representative of Rescue-1122, said Dawn that the residential buildings’ first and second stories had collapsed.
According to the official, a group of professionals conducted a rescue operation on the site and succeeded in extracting all five victims from the debris.
After receiving first assistance at the scene for their injuries, they were sent to the Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital in Karachi to receive further care. The injured woman’s condition is reportedly critical.
According to the rescue official, it looked to be a building from the British era whose structure had been deemed “weak” and “unlivable” by specialists. He said that there was concern that the building would collapse at any moment.
As a result, the relevant authorities had recommended the residents to leave, but the ground floor family didn’t seem eager to do so, claiming they would be homeless when they moved out.
Upon his visit to the spot, Director General Abdul Rasheed Solangi of the Sindh structure Control Authority informed the media that the structure was built in 1937.
He stated that the building had been deemed “dangerous” by the authorities, who had also given the residents numerous orders to leave.
