Real Madrid’s star forward Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or for the fourth time, claimed Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo on Tuesday.
Ronaldo is pegged as the favourite to win the Ballon d’Or, considering his combined accolades with club and country in the calendar year, where he led Real Madrid to their 11th Champions League title, and also successfully guided his national team to their first major silverware, as Portugal went on to become the Euro 2016 champions.
However, the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Saurez and Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann on top of the nominations list, haven’t yet been ruled out by the critics, from winning the prestigious award.
Francesc Aguilar, a sports journalist claimed that France Football – the newspaper which first founded the award – will fly to Madrid on Thursday to conduct an interview with Ronaldo.
The winner is due to be announced on Monday.
