WASHINGTON: After claiming to have conducted years of investigation and study into its early ties to the slave trade, Yale University apologized on Friday for its association with slavery.
“We acknowledge our university’s historical involvement in slavery and its associations with it, as well as the labor, experiences, and contributions of slaves to our history,” the US university said in a statement. “We also express regret for the ways that Yale’s leaders, throughout the course of our beginnings, participated in slavery,” the statement read.
A rising number of establishments have issued public regrets in recent years for their prior involvement in the transatlantic slave trade. Following the Black man’s killing in 2020 at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, George Floyd, there was a renewed push in 2020 to address racist legacies in the US.
Members of the Yale & Slavery Research Project have been investigating connections between the university located in New Haven, Connecticut, and slavery since October 2020. They have published their results.
