UMERKOT: On Wednesday, civil society organization activists from all throughout the province took part in a demonstration headed, among others, by the daughter of Dr. Shahnawaz Kunbhar, a blasphemy suspect who was allegedly slain by police in a fictitious encounter last week.
The Umerkot Press Club was the venue of the protest demonstration.Protesters held signs that said, “The land of peace needs peace” and “Soil of Sindh needs peace.”
The social media account that was identified to as his father’s was linked to someone else, Shah Nawaz Shah, according to Ms. Hareem Kunbhar, who stated that it had not been confirmed that his father had committed the blasphemy.
“You have been claiming to be chairman of a democratic and secular party, but your Tharparkar MNA Ameer Ali Shah Jeelani has been seen garlanding the police officials who killed Dr. Shahnawaz, a grade 18th officer, extrajudicially,” Comrade Punhal Sario and others said in an attempt to draw Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s attention.
They added, “He should be denotified because he has been endorsing fanatical practices.”
They called for an inquiry into the incident and the excommunication of Umer Jan Sarhandi, a local spiritual leader, and his adherents.
They also demanded the arrest of Umerkot SSP and his police squad, as well as DIG Javed Sonharo Jiskani and his entire team, who were said to have slain the suspect and turned the doctor over to Sindhri police for execution.
The speakers urged an investigation into who used social media to incite the crowd to assassinate Dr. Shahnawaz, who had asked people not to bury him in his hometown cemetery and to set his body on fire.
Junaid Kunbhar, Allah Bux Kunbhar, Manzoor Solangi, Sikiladho Rahimoo, Mazhar Talpur, writer Mir Hassan Arisar, advocate Junaid Kunbhar, and Sindhu Nawaz Ghanghro, among others, announced a strong protest demonstration in Karachi on October 6 and urged people to attend it as a symbol of their rejection of extremism.
