SRINAGAR: Dozens of soldiers have been killed by their colleagues in Kashmir since militancy broke out in the region in 1989.
Stress levels are high among security forces and security agencies are giving its troops psychology lessons to counter a rise in suicides and murders within the forces.
The security forces have been also trying to bring down stress levels by introducing yoga to soldiers, paramilitary and police personnel who also face danger from tough terrain and extreme weather conditions in Kashmir.

1996-December 25: Soldier kills five colleagues in Sopore
SRINAGAR: A soldier ran amok with a gun on Wednesday killing five of his colleagues, including two officers, and wounding seven others, an army spokesman said.
The soldier, from the Rashtriya Rifles in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir state, “ran amok and fired indiscriminately at his colleagues…before he was overpowered,” the spokesman said.
1997-June 16: Soldier kills five colleagues in Shopian
SRINAGAR: A soldier ran amok and shot dead five of his colleagues in the country’s troubled Jammu and Kashmir state, a defence spokesman said on Monday.
“A Rashtriya Rifles soldier on Sunday ran amok in Shopian camp and fired indiscriminately at his colleagues and killed five soldiers including two officers and injured another officer,” the spokesman said.
1997- Aug 13: Soldier kills 3 colleagues in Budgam
SRINAGAR: An army soldier ran amok with a gun and shot dead three of his colleagues and wounded another in the troubled state of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesman said on Wednesday.
“A soldier of Rashtriya Rifles on Tuesday night ran amok in Budgam army camp and shot dead three of his colleagues and wounded another,” said Major P. Purushottam, a defence spokesman.
1996-Aug 26: Angry soldier kills five colleagues in R.S. Pora sector
JAMMU:An angry soldier shot dead five of his colleagues on Thursday after a quarrel with one of them in Jammu and Kashmir state, a defence official said.
Surinder Singh began firing his light machine gun indiscriminately after the row broke out at a border post in Budyal Brahamna, in the R.S. Pora sector, the official said.
2001- Sept 10: Berserk soldier kills five in Udhampur
JAMMU: A soldier in the Himalayan region of Kashmir went berserk and sprayed an army barracks with fire from an automatic rifle, killing four colleagues and himself, a defence spokesman said on Monday.
The bloody rampage in Udhampur on Sunday night was at least the third of its kind this year involving security forces struggling to crush a 12-year-old rebellion in Kashmir against New Delhi’s rule.
2001-Sept 28:Policeman in Doda on rampage kills two, himself
JAMMU: A policeman in the violence-racked region of Kashmir went on a rampage at a police camp and shot dead two colleagues and himself, police said on Friday.
The victims in the incident in Doda district, 175 km (110 miles) east of Jammu, the winter capital of the state, included a police inspector. One policeman was wounded.
2006-March 6: Soldier kills four colleagues in Jammu
JAMMU: A soldier shot dead four colleagues before killing himself following an argument between members of two regiments at an army camp in Indian Kashmir, a military official said.
The incident took place late on Sunday at a military camp near Miran Sahib about 20 km (12 miles) southwest of Jammu, the winter capital of the insurgency-hit Himalayan region.
2006-October 24: Soldier in Rajouri kills two colleagues, commits suicide
JAMMU:A soldier shot dead two colleagues before killing himself after an argument at a Kashmir army camp in the second such shooting in three days, a defense official said on Tuesday.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon in the Buddhal area of Rajouri district, 170 km (110 miles) northwest of Jammu, the winter capital of the insurgency-hit Himalayan region.
2006-October 31: Soldier kills officer in Harwan camp
SRINAGAR:A soldier shot an officer dead at an army camp in Kashmir on Tuesday in the fourth such fatal shooting in a little over a week, an army spokesman said.
The shooting took place in the mountainous Harwan area on outskirts of Srinagar, Kashmir’s summer capital.
2007- Nov 10: Soldier kills two senior colleagues in Doda
JAMMU: An Army soldier ran amok and shot dead two senior colleagues with his service rifle in a battle school in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir Saturday.
Lt. Col. SD Goswami, the defence spokesman in Jammu, said the soldier, identified as Vivek Kumar Sharma, “ran amok and killed a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) with his service rifle in the Corps Battle School at Bhalara”.
2013- May 21: SSB Soldier Kills Two Colleagues in Kishtwar
SRINAGAR: A Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) trooper shot dead two fellow soldiers and injured two others at a security camp in Jammu and Kashmir after an argument, police said on Tuesday.
The shooting, the latest in a string of such incidents in the strife-torn region, took place on Monday night in Kishtwar town, south of Srinagar.
2013-Oct 25: Soldier Kills Army Officer in Kokernag
SRINAGAR: A Junior Commissioner Officer (JCO) of Rashtriya Rifles – the Indian army’s counter-Insurgency unit – has allegedly been shot dead by his subordinate in south Kashmir.
Rajinder Singh, a resident of Uttarakhand state, had had an altercation with soldier Satish Kumar over some issue at their camp in Kokernag town of Anantnagh district.
2014-Feb 27: Army Soldier Shoots Dead Five Colleagues in Manasbal, Kills Self
SRINAGAR: A soldier shot dead five fellow soldiers at a security camp in Kashmir after an argument before killing himself, official sources said on Thursday.
The shooting, the latest in a string of such incidents in the strife-torn region, took place on Wednesday night in Ganderbal district, northeast of Srinagar, Kashmir’s summer capital.
