Openers Mohammad Hafeez (33) and Azhar Ali (24) were at the crease after England were bowled out in their first innings for 306 on the third day of the third and final Test against Pakistan, gaining a lead of 72 runs.
England lost Samit Patel for 42 after they resumed after lunch on 285-7 at Sharjah stadium.
For Pakistan, off-spinner Shoaib Malik returned career-best figures of 4-33 while leg-spinner Yasir Shah finished with 3-99.
Pakistan lead the three-match series 1-0.
