MOSCOW: According to Russian officials, a piece of an apartment building in Belgorod fell after being struck by a missile fired by Ukraine, resulting in at least seven fatalities and seventeen injuries.
Russia reported that Ukraine launched a major missile attack using Adler and RM-70 Vampire (MLRS) multiple launch rocket systems along with Tochka ballistic missiles, making it one of the worst attacks on the Belgorod region to date.
At least ten stories of the skyscraper could be seen crumbling on the footage from the scene. Later, when rescue workers searched through the debris for survivors, the roof fell, sending people running for their life with debris and dust trailing behind them.
Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesman, was quoted by the TASS news agency on Sunday as saying that acting emergencies minister and governor of the Belgorod region briefed Russian President Vladimir Putin on the “barbaric” missile strike.
Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Defense referred to it as a terrorist attack on a residential area. “An apartment building in the city of Belgorod was damaged by fragments of one of the downed Tochka-U missiles,” the statement continued.
According to Russian news outlets, there have been at least seven fatalities and seventeen injuries, including two children. Some people remained ensnared beneath the debris.
According to Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry, the strike was a deliberate assault on people that demonstrated the criminality of both Ukraine and its supporters, mainly the US and its allies in Europe.
Ukraine did not immediately respond to the incident.
Kharkiv front
Conversely, following intense artillery bombardment of the Kharkiv region, Russian forces broke through the border and drove Ukrainian soldiers from other nearby settlements. In the Ukrainian Kharkiv region, four more villages—Hatyshche, Krasne, Morokhovets, and Oliinykove—were reported taken by Russian forces on Sunday.
As Russian forces advance at strategic areas along the front in the east and south, Ukraine has been forced to commit more troops to the area as a result of the move.
According to Russian military bloggers, Russia was encircling Ukrainian strongholds with highly mobility small units of troops after using its numerical advantage to press forcefully into comparatively undefended areas.
The military chief of Ukraine stated that although battle in the Kharkiv region was challenging, their soldiers were making every effort to hold the position.
“The Russian invaders’ attempts to breach our defenses have been thwarted by units of the Defense Forces engaging in fierce defensive battles,” Oleksandr Syrskyi declared.
