On Monday, Aqib Javed, a member of the PCB’s men’s selection committee, was named the temporary head coach for white-ball cricket.
The move follows the PCB’s denial of a media story that said Javed was going to take Jason Gillespie’s place as head coach across all formats.
Javed will “continue to serve as a senior member of the men’s National Selection Committee, and will be assigned additional responsibilities” during his tenure, the PCB said in a news release today following the end of the Champions Trophy 2025.
In addition, it stated that the PCB will “start the hiring process for a permanent white-ball head coach, with the goal of finalizing the appointment by the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy,” which is set for February 19–March 9.
Gillespie, who was named to the position last month following the resignation of former South Africa top-order batsman Gary Kirsten, is expected to be replaced by Javed.
Gillespie took over as the Green Team’s red-ball head coach in April, while Kirsten was named to oversee the white-ball variation.
But Kirsten left the job last month, and Gillespie took up his responsibilities as well.
A Dawn report claims that Kirsten was not involved in the selection of the Pakistani team for the visits to Australia and Zimbabwe, nor was she consulted.
According to earlier reports from the Press Trust of India news agency, Javed or former spinner Saqlain Mushtaq might become the head coach of the national team in white-ball cricket.
Gillespie will remain the coach for the next round of red-ball matches.
According to a Sunday ESPNcricinfo post, Javed was expected to take Gillespie’s place as head coach across all formats.
According to the site, the decision would be made as soon as Monday following the conclusion of Pakistan’s third and final match in their current Twenty20 series against Australia.
On Sunday night, however, the PCB “strongly” denied the claim in a post on X.
For the two red-ball matches against South Africa, Jason Gillespie will continue to coach the Pakistani team, as was previously announced, the statement said.
Who would captain the team after those two games has not been verified by the PCB.
During Pakistan’s Test series against England last month, Gillespie had openly voiced his worries about being restricted to a “match-day strategist.”
