BATTAGRAM: The superintendent of the Battagram Sub-Jail has been charged by the police with beating a female prisoner on October 2.
Police officials told Dawn that a female was lodged in the sub-jail under section 406 of Pakistan Penal Code. They said the girl submitted a formal complaint to the police that Shehryar Khan, the sub-jail superintendent, brought her to his office and abused her.
She reported to the authorities that despite her cries for assistance, no one answered.
Imtiaz Shah, the SHO of the Battagram City Police Station, said Dawn that the accused was the subject of a case filed under PPC sections 376 and 506. He claimed that the complaint was brought for a medical checkup to the District Headquarters Hospital in Battagram.
But he claimed that out of concern for the anger of the community, the jail official obtained bail before being taken into custody and left the area.
In the meantime, the Home and Tribal Affairs Department suspended the jail official and referred him to the Inspectorate of Prisons as an OSD after the accused filed a formal complaint. Additionally, the department established an inquiry commission, whose members include Nagina Mehsud, superintendent of the district jail in Mansehra, and Umair Khan, deputy inspector general of prisons, Hazara division.
According to the police, the sub-jail superintendent’s family was compelled to leave the region on Monday by the people of Ajmera village. They said that the family ran away to a Thakot relative’s home.
