ISLAMABAD: Despite opposition from one legislator, the National Assembly unanimously endorsed a resolution on Tuesday opposing India’s unilateral removal of held-Kashmir’s special status.
The Youm-i-Istehsaal-i-Kashmir Day Resolution was proposed by Safron and Kashmir Affairs Minister Amir Muqam. It called on India to free political prisoners in Kashmir, offer humanitarian aid, put an end to ongoing human rights violations, and sincerely implement the pertinent UN Security Council resolutions so that the Kashmiri people can democratically decide their future through a fair and impartial plebiscite held under UN auspices.
It said, “The House pays tribute to the courage and bravery of the Kashmiri people and reiterates its moral, political, and diplomatic support to their struggle for the right to self-determination.”
PkMAP head Mehmood Khan Achakzai raised a point of order after the resolution was passed, stating that he had opposed it because he had been denied the opportunity to change the document.
Mr. Achakzai made a strong speech, portions of which were edited out of the NA webcast, in which he stated that while they had always backed independence movements, the Kashmiri people ought to be asked which nation they would like to join.
He stated they would be welcome to join Pakistan of their own free choosing.
In addition, Mr. Achakzai referred to the speaker as a “havaldar” and attacked him for denying him a chance to address the resolution.
The speaker replied that he was honored to be referred to as a “havaldar” because they were the nation’s front-line protectors.
Additionally, he informed Mr. Achakzai that his protests against the resolution had been noted.
PPP MNA Shazia Marri expressed sadness that Mr. Achakzai had resisted the resolution during her point of order speech.
Subsequently, PTI members Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Ali Muhammad Khan made it clear that their party has backed the decision of the Kashmir dispute.
