The tense FA Cup third-round match between Manchester United and Arsenal ended 1-1 after extra time on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium, with Joshua Zirkzee scoring the game-winning penalty for the 10-man Manchester United.
After Zirkzee, who was jeered off during a loss to Newcastle United last month, stepped up to win the shootout 5-3, Kai Havertz of Arsenal was the only one of the initial four penalty takers to miss after being thwarted by an incredible save by Altay Bayindir.
After a lackluster first half, United seized the lead in the 52nd minute thanks to a fantastic run by Alejandro Garnacho and a curling effort from Bruno Fernandes just inside the area.
However, ten minutes later, United’s Diogo Dalot, who had previously been booked for a wild charge on Myles Lewis-Skelly, was given a second yellow card for a reckless tackle on Mikel Merino, turning the tide of the match.
The Gunners gained control of the match two minutes later when Gabriel’s shot deflected wickedly off Matthijs de Ligt and in after Bayindir’s ill-fated attempt at a punch dropped at his feet.
After Havertz went down under little contact from Harry Maguire, Arsenal was given a dubious penalty, which would have completed the comeback.
However, before the Gunners missed multiple chances to score a winner, Bayindir made an incredible stop against Martin Odegaard, the captain of Arsenal.
Later on Sunday night, United will draw to determine their opponent for the fourth round.
