KARACHI: Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated on Tuesday that efforts were being made to reduce street crime in Karachi and that the province’s state of law and order had much improved.
Speaking during a press conference, he claimed that although street crime had increased in the city under the caretaker administration, things had improved as a result of the Sindh government’s successful initiatives.
He claimed that street crime affected the entire world.
“Karachi ranks 78th out of 333 cities in various countries according to the International Crime Index,” he stated, adding that street crime in US cities like Oakland, New Orleans, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco, and Washington was worse than it was in Karachi.
According to the International Crime Index, he said that Paris had a worse street crime rate than Karachi.
In response to a query, he stated that since some of the illegal immigrants in the province have been connected to numerous instances, they represent a serious and ongoing concern. “The provincial government has shown a strong commitment to upholding law and order,” he said, adding that “the government is earnestly working to address this issue.”
Mr. Memon, who oversees the ministries of information, transportation, excise, revenue, and drug control, also emphasized the seriousness of Pakistan’s widespread drug problem and the risks associated with artificial substances like ice and crystal, which impair cognitive function.
He mentioned that parents were also affected negatively by the medications.
