ISLAMABAD: A health official has confirmed that a 23-month-old girl in Kharan district, Balochistan, was diagnosed with poliovirus a day after her death, bringing the total number of cases this year to 15.
With 12 cases reported from eight districts (Dera Bugti, Chaman, Qila Abdullah, Quetta, Jhal Magsi, Zhob, Qila Saifullah, and now Kharan), Balochistan continues to be the epicenter of the disease.
An official from the National Institute of Health (NIH) stated that the victim, who lived in Union Council South City-A in Kharan tehsil, passed away on August 19 at a Quetta hospital.
He continued by saying that the parents reported that on July 31, the youngster experienced a high-grade fever, lower limb paralysis, and neck muscular paralysis.
After caring for the infant at home for five days, the family brought her to a neighborhood unofficial healthcare practitioner on August 4.
The girl was brought to a private hospital three days later, on August 7, where she was informed that she may have poliovirus.
The following day, a sample was sent to the NIH and the case was looked at. Before the start of paralysis, the patient had no history of intramuscular injection, which is often a shot in the arm.
Prior to the virus’s beginning, the child’s travel history has not been documented. He stated that the infant died on August 19, 2024.
