ANKARA: According to the province governor, a helicopter crashed into a hospital in southwest Turkiye on Sunday, killing four people. The cause of the disaster is still unknown, but the thick fog may have contributed to it.
Idris Akbiyik, the provincial governor of Mugla, stated that two pilots, a doctor, and an employee were killed after the helicopter crashed to the ground after colliding with a hospital’s fourth story during takeoff.
Akbiyik stated that “there was intense fog,” and that the cause of the accident was being looked into by the authorities.
Images from the NTV television channel show the helicopter taking flight from the top of the city of Mugla’s hospital in bad visibility on its way to Antalya.
According to Turkish media, the helicopter was observed drifting in the fog for a few minutes after takeoff before colliding with an empty field adjacent to the hospital it struck.
The incident occurs less than two weeks after two helicopters collided during an army training exercise in the southwest Isparta province of Turkey, killing six troops. The cause of that crash was not disclosed by the defense ministry at the time.
