According to his attorney, a Pakistani man who is charged with attempting to support the violent Islamic State (IS) group by planning an attack on a Jewish center in New York City will challenge his extradition hearing to the US.
The 20-year-old Muhammad Shahzeb Khan was detained in Canada earlier this month on suspicion of attempting to enter the US. He was accused of trying to give resources and material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (IS), a recognized foreign terrorist organization.
He is wanted for extradition by the US.
“I am mandated to contest the extradition hearing,” Reuters was informed by Gaetan Bourassa, Khan’s attorney.
“We will examine the evidence they have to request extradition; he is a young person who has been arrested.”
Without viewing the US-sourced evidence, which has not yet been given, he would not comment on the case.
Khan arrived in Canada in June 2023, having obtained a student visa. His attorney refused to disclose what or where he was studying.
Khan was charged by the US Department of Justice with organizing a mass shooting at a Jewish community center in Brooklyn on October 7, 2024, almost one year after Hamas launched its devastating operation in Gaza in response to an attack in Israel.
In November 2023, Khan started sharing his support for IS via an encrypted messaging platform, according to the US Department of Justice. He supposedly told undercover investigators about his plans for an attack.
