LAHORE: Following the current political upheaval in the nation, PML-N President Nawaz Sharif has made the decision to get involved in politics, mainly to “counter the popularity of jailed PTI supremo Imran Khan,” Dawn has learned on Tuesday.
A minister informed Dawn, “It has been decided that the elder Sharif will visit different parts of the country to reactivate the party at first.”
Mr. Sharif, who has been residing in the Murree hill station for the most part, would travel to Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in that order. In Punjab, he would also host discussions on this topic.
The senior leadership of the PML-N met in Lahore last month, and a proposal to reorganize and revitalize the party at the grassroots level was put out. Because of this, Mr. Sharif will personally supervise the procedure and give preference to devoted party members and leaders for open party positions, according to the minister. Mr. Sharif would stage rallies around the nation during the second phase.
Following the formation of Shehbaz Sharif’s government in the Center, there has been a perception in the party and the media that the previous premier’s role in the PML-N has been limited to a ceremonial one. It has been stated that a few prominent party figures, such as Maryam Nawaz, the chief minister of Punjab and daughter of Nawaz Sharif, have asked him to get more involved in party matters.
A party official told Dawn, “In addition, the current political climate also demands that Nawaz Sharif be seen politically active to counter the popularity of imprisoned PTI supremo Imran Khan.”
According to him, Nawaz Sharif wished to fulfill his responsibility of reducing the power of forces hostile to democracy because he was worried about the “limited space” that politicians currently had.
Mr. Sharif recently gave orders to his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif’s administration in the Central and his daughter Maryam Nawaz’s government in Punjab to include the party in major issue decision-making.
“Nawaz Sharif asked for ideas during a party meeting to strengthen the party’s position in governmental matters. Additionally, he wants the party to be consulted before the government makes significant administrative decisions, PML-N Punjab President and PM’s advisor Rana Sanaullah earlier stated to Dawn following a recent party meeting.
Mr. Sanaullah continued, “There has been a perception that the administration makes decisions with bureaucratic footprints, which need to be replaced with political ones.
